Opening Night: Setting the Urban Agenda of Tomorrow

Urban Conference

During the opening programme Kate Raworth, Toni Griffin, Francesca Bria, Gabriella Gómez-Mont, Aisha Bin Bishr, and others, will answer the questions are key to this first edition of the WeMakeThe.City festival: What kind of city do we want to live in, in five, ten or fifteen years time? And how do we make the city of the future; inclusive, sustainable, affordable, safe and prosperous?

All around the world, cities and urban areas are experiencing an increasing pressure on the physical space and living environments. More and more cities are becoming the economic motors of entire countries, and the majority of the world’s population is living in cities. Large cities are predominantly successful, but at the same time, they are places where social issues and discomforts can accumulate.

Amsterdam’s Metropolitan area is currently thriving, but our city is also under pressure. An overheated housing market, irritations about increasing tourism, a decline in accessibility and mobility, a huge task ahead to reach the climate targets, a faltering welfare, health, and education sector, and a seriously increasing divide in the city. At the same time, the ongoing digitalisation puts a growing pressure on data privacy, job security, and confidence in the market and government. What choices must be made in order to create a livable, safe, and accessible metropolitan area with a job and living space for everyone?

One development manifests itself through everything, namely a rapidly increasing complexity. Everything is connected to everything, and the issues at hand today can no longer be solved by one single party. Even the government and the market cannot deal with the problems on their own. The major urban and societal challenges require new coalitions and alternative forms of cooperation, in which citizens are explicitly involved. How can we achieve sustainable change together, change in which we spare the environment and grow towards a fairer society?

Prior to the programma, from 6 to 7 pm, there will be an oppurtunity to partake in a dinner. Please make sure to get your separate ticket.
