Wasteland

Urban Expo

Expo by Kadir van Lohuizen

In 2050, 70 percent of the world population will live in a city. Together they produce an enormous amount of waste, which a lot of metropolises are already unable to process. Photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen - winner of the World Press Photo Award 2018 ‘Environment’ - documented the main waste streams in five metropolises: Tokyo, New York, Jakarta, Sao Paolo, Lagos, and his hometown Amsterdam. From garbage on the streets to the recycling industry.

The result is an impressive photographed and filmed exposé of pictures and video footage made by drones of waste dumps. Van Lohuizen provides insight into the consequences of our consumer behaviour, the waste management in cities and the economic impact of this industry. ‘Wasteland’ also shows the often appalling circumstances in which so many people in the waste industry earn their money.
