Living Lab North Tour

Urban Expedition

Transforming an industrial area into a creative and innovative city district

Only five years ago, Amsterdam Noord was a remote location on the far side of the river IJ. A fringe with a rich wharf history, which has left its marks on the environment. Squatters and artists settled on the abandoned industrial sites and established festivals like Robocop, the Over het IJ Festival with its famous Dogtroop performances and Kunstenstad. Over ten years ago the first development project started and came to a swift halt, due to the crisis. The end of the crisis was marked by the opening of the new EYE Filmmuseum, opposite the Central Station, the development of Overhoeks, including successful creative hubs A Lab and ADAM Tower, and the renovation of the Van der Pek neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, a meaningful bottom-up movement of self-builders with sustainable ambitions manifested itself in Buiksloterham. Circular Buiksloterham was born and with it dozens of houses, cooperative apartment buildings and an intensive collaboration between the water company, network managers and citizens, to create new forms of self-sufficiency. Like De Ceuvel, the ultimate example of a circular living lab. The NDSM wharf has developed into a public space for the continuing experiment, with workspaces and studios for artists and designers, like MX3D, a startup 3D printing a steel bridge for an Amsterdam canal.

The tour starts at Ferrotopia on the NDSM Wharf and will pass by MX3D, Palais de Cup at Circular Buiksloterham and De Ceuvel. It continues via de Van der Pekstraat to the Buikslotermeer Ferry.

The tour is in English.
