Me and the Tourist

Urban Expo

With more and more tourists flooding Amsterdam, the cities’ residents have come to consider them somewhat of a plague. But at the same time, the inhabitants seem to forget that each tourist is an unique person who has their personal motivation to visit the city.

The project ‘Me and the Tourist’ is a collaboration between students of the Breitner Academy and photographer Jan Hoek, in which they explore the prejudices against tourists and look for ways to contradict, bend, confirm, or deepen these views. The project is part of the theme week of the Breitner Academy, in which diversity plays a central role.

What is our relationship to tourists? How do we interact with them, and how do we want them to interact with our city? Answers to these questions can be found in the form of photographs, videos, drawings and performances, which will be exhibited during WeMakeThe.City. The works will be shown at the Breitner Academie in A Lab, Overhoeks/Amsterdam North.
