Docu: Britain's Forgotten Slave Owners, part 1

Urban Special

Documentary about Britain and London’s wealthy infrastructure rooted in slavery

The BBC documentary is about Britain and London’s wealthy infrastructure rooted in slavery. We get to follow the thorough and studied analysis on how the wealth earned by the systematic and long slavery system, trickled down generations. Other tackled questions are, how is London’s city plan, economy, political and cultural system related to slavery? And in what ways did slavery contribute to London’s wealth and it becoming a world power? We also get a glimpse of how the slavery system seeped into every corner of Britain.

Rethink Amsterdam screens this documentary because it offers the tools to rethink about our city Amsterdam, and how it relates to slavery.

The documentary was originally broadcasted in July 2015 on BBC2. The program won the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) TV award for 2016 in the ‘Specialist factual’ category and it also won the Royal Historical Society Public History Prize Winner for Broadcasting.

English, no subtitles.
